Bayesian comparison of Italian earthquakes
نویسنده
چکیده
Earthquakes in Sannio Matese, a quite large Italian area, are divided into three geographical areas and interoccurrence times of major earthquakes, their magnitudes and number of minor earthquakes are analysed from a Bayesian point of view and then compared, discovering that diierent behaviours characterise the areas. Similar results are obtained by considering either a reasonable proper prior measure on the parameters of interest or a noninformative one.

Abstract Earthquakes occur at teh border of teh plates and faults, causing financial and casual damages. Teh study of earthquakes and surface deformation is useful in understanding teh mechanism of earthquakes and managing teh risks and crises of earthquakes. A fault can be specified by its geometric source parameters. In Okada’s definition, these parameters are length, width, depth, strike, di...
متن کاملBayesian Networks for Earthquake Magnitude Classification in a Early Warning System
During last decades, worldwide researchers dedicated efforts to develop machine-based seismic Early Warning systems, aiming at reducing the huge human losses and economic damages. The elaboration time of seismic waveforms is to be reduced in order to increase the time interval available for the activation of safety measures. This paper suggests a Data Mining model able to correctly and quickly ...
متن کاملDistribution of Seismicity before the Larger Earthquakes in Italy in The
The Region-Time-Length (RTL) algorithm has been applied to different instrumental catalogues to detect seismic quiescence before medium-to-large earthquakes in Italy in the last two decades. RTL performances are sensitive to the choice of spatial and temporal parameters. The method for automatic parameters selection developed by Chen and Wu has been applied to 12 Italian earthquakes with magnit...
متن کاملThe Consumption Response to Liquidity-enhancing Transfers: Evidence from Italian Earthquakes
Exploiting three Italian earthquakes as quasi-experiments, we analyze the response of homeowners’ consumption to transfers targeted to finance housing reconstruction over time—which, like loans, mainly affect the liquidity of households’ wealth in the short run. We show that transfers that have no effect on consumption over a multi-year horizon, can have significant heterogeneous effects on imp...
